Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Home > Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

What is Recognition of Prior Learning?

The Recognition of Prior Learning process involves matching your knowledge and skills to the learning outcomes of nationally recognised qualifications to determine if you can be given credit for specific units.

QPTS acknowledges that relevant knowledge and skills can be acquired through a variety of means, not just through formal education and training.

What are the benefits of RPL?

  • You can gain your qualification in a reduced amount of time; dependent on how much knowledge and skills already held.
  • Eliminated duplication of learning – if you know it already there is no need to go over what you already know
  • Can identify areas where you need further development

Steps in the RPL Process

Step 1 – Provide information about your skills and experience

All participants in QPTS courses have the opportunity to discuss RPL at the time of enrolment. An application form will be made available to you if you wish to apply for RPL. You will need to provide as much information as possible about your previous experience related to the industry area.

There may be instances where you may have little, or no documentary evidence of your industry experience. This is not a barrier to gaining recognition. This will just require you to rely on the questioning during the Competency Conversation step.

Step 2 – Conversation with RPL Assessor

An assessor will review and discuss the information you have provided and begin to match up your skills, knowledge and experience to the units in the qualification you are considering undertaking. During this conversation you will be required to answer industry related questions to clarify your current skills. The RPL Assessor involved in the conversation is someone who has experience in the industry and understands its requirements, as well as the requirements of the qualification.

Step 3 – Practical demonstration of your skills

The assessor will conduct a practical skills test at your workplace (if appropriate) or at another suitable location. This again is an opportunity to demonstrate your level of competence. This assessment will be focused on skills that are required in the qualification. Your assessor will identify the skills that he/she will want you to demonstrate.

Step 4 – Third Party Report (if accessible)

The assessor will obtain verification from your workplace supervisor that you have performed all the required tasks and duties of your role to organisational and industry standards. Your workplace supervisor will be required to sign off your performance against the units of competency you are applying for RPL.

Step 5 – You will be required to submit a portfolio of evidence

A portfolio is a collection of documents that you must compile to show your competence against each unit and as well as present the required evidence. Such as minutes of meetings attended, SWMS, pre starts and incident reports to name a few.

Further steps

After the assessment, your assessor will give you information about the skills that have been recognised and whether you have gained the full qualification. If you do have skill gaps, these may be addressed through flexible training.

FEES

In most instances, RPL Fees are covered under the agreement with your employer. Please contact QPTS if you wish to apply for RPL.
